Provincial Wrap Up!
Provincial play is done for the season! We had great participation this year with 9 teams taking part.
Our U10A Storm took Silver on the B side of their event and our U10B had their first Provincial experience. In U12, our girls finished first in the round robin but couldn’t quite pull off a Sunday win and finished just out of the medals.
This past weekend we hosted 4 different age levels with over 40 teams! Our last Provincial hosting experience was in 2011. Looking through the names from that year, it was awesome to see how many of those girls have continued on to keep playing and have become excellent ball players. There is even one player who was a member of a U12C team that year and became a member of the Junior Women’s National Team! Last time, we had to deal with sleet and rain! Not the case this time, as players, coaches and volunteers had to cope with temperatures above 30 at times, got to love that Alberta weather! Happily, the hot weather didn’t stop some outstanding ball from happening this weekend.
Thanks to all who came out and supported our teams! To all the participating teams and their fans, we hope you had a great time. Thank you also to the supporters/sponsors who helped us out. Thanks to our special guests at the Opening Ceremonies, we got to see that you can play this sport for a lifetime at many different levels. We feel lucky our community has such a beautiful facility to host in. A big thank you to the umpires and Softball Alberta officials for their hard work, we know it can’t happen without you. Of course, thank you to the volunteers for working countless hours. This event will continue to benefit softball in our community for years to come!
Our teams had great success this weekend. There was excellent ball played by all our teams against some very tough competition. In the end, our players came away with two medals. U14 ‘03 Storm came away with Gold in U14A and now move on to Westerns in North Battleford! Our U16 Storm claimed the silver in the A division, a huge accomplishment for a mostly first year team! They now move on to Nationals in Delta, BC in August. Good luck to both teams, as they continue their season!
In conclusion, we got to watch some young women show us just how powerful and determined they can be, some fabulous memories were made, some character was built and some lifetime friendships were continued, what more could you want from a sport! Let’s keep growing the game!
